Yesterday Connor and Caleb got to participate in a track and field partnership event with the Special Olympics in Las Vegas. Basically the Special Ed PE teacher at their school takes her 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Special Ed PE kids and 25 other regular ed PE kids from 4th and 5th grade and works with them for a few months before the event practicing and timing them on the 50 meter, 100 meter, softball and javelin throws and long jumping. Then on May 1 all the elementary schools in Vegas meet at a high school track and basically do the "finals". Each school has the same thing with Special Ed kids and regular ed kids competing together. Connor and Caleb each won first place in their heats for the 50 meter. Caleb said that he heard some kids saying at the end of his race that it was a 3-way tie but it looked like to me that he won. Anyway we were there most of the day yesterday. The kids rode the bus into town but I drove my car because I hate the bus and it was a good thing that I did. The wind was blowing and it was stinking cold. So cold that I went to Target to get a pair of pants for me because I stupidly wore shorts and then to look for jackets or sweatshirts for the boys. Target had no jackets, no sweatshirts not even any blankets that weren't $40. So I bought 2 beach towels to take back so that while the kids were waiting on the bleachers for their turns they could at least cover up with the beach towels. Now I know all you from the frozen North are thinking that how can Logandale be that cold but with the wind blowing from the North it was like 20 degrees cooler yesterday than the day before and when the wind comes from the North it is a really cold wind. Connor got to do this last year and had a good time. The Special Ed PE teacher really likes him-she was his scout leader when he was a Wolf. At the end of the day we heard that they think that our school took first place overall. The kids are all excited because that means they get a trophy to display at the school, a party and an assembly to honor them. It is a good thing that they get to participate in and help them learn to be compassionate towards those who may have disabilities. Their badges had a quote on the back that said
"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me brave in the attempt".
3 Happy Thoughts:
What a great PE teacher. I think that is an awesome way for kids to learn to treat all people with love and respect.
This is so cool. Jenni, you and Don are great parents to get your kids involved in everything they do. What great character builders you two are for your family.
I swear your kids are the busiest, most active kids I've ever seen. For living in such a small town, you guys sure know how to fill up the days!
