Deep Thoughts

"Great things are brought about and burdens lightened through the efforts of many hands “anxiously engaged in a good cause.” Imagine what the millions of Latter-day Saints could accomplish in the world if we functioned like a beehive in our focused, concentrated commitment to the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ." M. Russell Ballard October 2012 General Conference

The First Week of School-Is It Friday Yet?

This post is an attempt to keep myself awake because it is only 6:30pm and this day not over yet.

Well the long hot summer is over here in Logandale-(Oh wait...the summer is over but it is still HOT! (check your map we are south of Hell) Didn't you know that it is supposed to be 107 degrees the first week of school? I restrained myself all summer long from writing some fabulously sarcastic post on the joys of Southern Nevada in the summer but I am slightly disgruntled-ok who are we kidding-really ticked off that many of the blogs that I stalk and some of the posts on Facebook (you know who you are!)rejoice in the delirium that is Fall. Somewhere other than here is the slight hint of changing leaves in the air and the earthy scent of freshly milled spiral bound notebooks wafting through open windows. School has started but Southern Nevada never gets the memo on cooling off just because the kids are back in school. Yes, the sounds of the school buses driving through my neighborhood at least 5 times a day,the bathroom door slamming at 4:45 IN THE MORNING, 100 lb backpacks full of hand sanitizer (Swine Flu ya know)and mechanical pencils because it is so not cool to have to sharpen a #2, and the smells of AXE deodorant and stinky (but cute) boy sweat emanating from my house does mean the kids are back to school but that does not make it Fall. Fall in Logandale starts in about November unless you are up at 5:00 (oh wait I am!)in the morning. At 5am, the temperature gauge surprisingly drops below 80 degrees and you can open your windows. That only lasts until about 6am when the sun starts blazing its way over the mesa to inflict great harm and psychological damage to all inhabitants greatly misinformed that School equals Cool-weather that is. You may ask why I am getting up at 5am and I'll tell you why.
4 kids going to
3 different schools at
3 different times from
5:55am to 8:45am
equals
0 minutes of time for ones self in the morning after the little darlings have rolled out of their beds.
I'm sure that is old news to some of you and you may be wondering why I am griping. Well, because our summer was of the SUPER lazy sort and most days there was no movement around here other than Don before 9:30. We kept General Mills in business this summer because I think I "made" breakfast maybe 5 times. All good mothers know that the last week of summer should include morning drills practicing the early rising techniques required when school starts and even occasional meals not eaten off paper plates just to get back in the groove. Our philosophy around here is why start the misery early when you can relish in the joy of JAG reruns at 12:30am and bury your head in the pillows until the neighbor kids ring the doorbell at 10am only to find out that your kids just barely got up? Am I rambling enough for you? We will take a short break for a trip to the Stake Center for mutual now and return later. Stay tuned for more of the ramblings of a mad woman on the First Week of School. I have not even told you all that has happened other than getting up before the neighbor's chickens! I have to go find my Zanax-I just got my power bill!

I'ts Not Just Sunday I Guess

Today we had the weevil explosion in my pantry and we had to throw away a huge box of Potato Pearls (yes I know they should be canned), a 25 lb bag of rice (that should be canned too), and numerous oatmeal packets. Then we had to go through everything else. We dumped out 1 25 lb bag of black beans, 1 25 lb bag of flour,6 containers of grits, 1 big thing of oatmeal, 1 large box of Minute Rice, 1 large container of bread crumbs checking to make sure that there were no bugs in them. After said dumpage we had to put all that stuff into freezer bags and 5 gallon buckets. Note to self-buy more freezer bags and 5 gallon buckets. I did dump half the bread crumbs on my rug so it can join its friend on the laundry room floor that has the OJ on it from yesterday that I still have not had time to wash. When I went to put the bread crumbs into the freezer I found that my freezer is so packed with crap that it would not fit. Oh wait if I move the ice cream container that someone put in the freezer with the lid on one shelf and the ice cream on the other maybe I can squish the bread crumbs between the 3 bags of frozen zucchini shreds and the 37 eggos. Did I break a mirror or something or walk under a ladder? Can I buy good Karma somewhere? What is the dang deal? I'm going to time out now for chucking a fore mentioned ice cream container. It's a good thing my aim is so bad or someone may have gotten hit.
P.S.-I have oreos in my nightstand-that may make me feel better.

Why Do I Even Bother?

So today is Sunday and what are we supposed to do on Sunday? Well obviously we are supposed to go to church. Apparently someone is trying to thwart me in my attempt to do what is right. Now keep in mind that this is not the first time I have been thwarted this summer so I will tell you both stories and you can decide if I need an exorcism.
Story #1
Today was a normal Sunday morning with my hair not working, numerous pairs of pants not fitting my kids, and black socks MIA so that only white socks can be worn with church shoes. On this day not unlike many other Sunday's Cody is taking his own sweet time getting ready and it is 10:45. I am finishing combing Cayden's hair and as I walk out of their room I grab a cup of orange juice (that is not allowed in the bedrooms mind you) and as I turn toward the door I bump into the door frame and dump orange juice all over me and the floor. This was probably about 1/2 a cup of juice but it looked like the whole jug was spilled on the floor in the hall, the walls, the door, the door frame, the baseboards, the rugs and of course down my dress, up into my hair and down my arm. Perfect-just so you know there will be no pictures of this Disaster of the Day because there were too much crying going on and even though I am telling all of you about it I really am still not amused. I did not yell at anyone, I did not accuse anyone and I did not make it to church on time. I went to my room, took off the dress, put on a pair of jammy pants all the while crying and crying and crying. I went back to the other side of the house, wiped up the juice, rolled up the rug, wiped the walls, the baseboards, and the door with my children hovering yet trying to be invisible in case the wrath of mom decided to make an appearance. After a hug from Don, he took the 3 boys to church while Cody dilly dallied in the bathroom getting ready-a regular Sunday occurrence. I cleaned up the kitchen, mopped the floors and then took a shower AGAIN. I really did not want to go to church but because Cody was still here I had to take him so I decided that I might as well go too. We missed Sacrament meeting but I made it to Sunday School and Relief Society. Now if this was the first time I had been foiled maybe I would not have cried so much but a few weeks ago...
Story #2
I can't remember everything that happened that morning other than it was another one of those days that I should have just stayed in bed. Cody was making us late and Don left with the 3 boys to get us a seat at church. When Cody was finally ready to go and I was heading to the car, I walked out the garage door and toward my car. When I turned I saw that I had walked by a toad that had made its way over to the door that goes into the house and it HOPPED at me. I walked right past it not seeing it and then it HOPPED at me. That was the final straw and of course I started to cry
(because when I get scared like that I cry) Cody came running and scooted the toad out of garage and into the driveway with a box because he was not going to touch it of course. I had to go in and fix my face and we were later than we would have been. I did make Cody walk out to the car before me just in case the toad came back or had friends. What is the deal? Sometimes I wonder why I even bother.
